How to Make the Biggest Impact with Your Donation
- Think about your philanthropic goals and take the time to learn about the causes that are most important to you, and the impact you want to have on your community. Do you have a particular area of interest - the arts, environment, poverty - or do you want to support a variety of causes? This is one of your most important decisions.
- Do you want to support a different group each year or do you want to establish a long-term commitment that could bring about a substantial change?
- Investigate how well a charity communicates who they are, what they do and whatthey want to achieve. If they're clear about their objectives, they'll likely be better able to measure and deliver results, and most importantly – help people.
- Look for transparency and openness. A charity should be able to assure you that yourgifts are being used as you intended. It should have a specific policy on donor rights, including privacy, and it should provide financial results on request.
