A grant to McMaster University’s Let’s Talk Science! partnership supported students from at four Hamilton elementary schools to care for and hatch Atlantic salmon eggs in their classrooms over the winter, and then to re-introduce the fish into the Lake Ontario watershed. Once a keystone species, these fish were eradicated from the lake in the late 1800s. This program enables children to learn about the vital role they can play in protecting the environment.
The Lee Hepner Music Award Fund was established in 1986 in memory of Dr. Lee Hepner, founder and conductor of the McMaster Symphony Orchestra and co-founder of the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
The Lee Hepner Awards are presented at the Junior and Senior Final competitions for piano, strings, woodwinds and brass of the annual Kiwanis Music Festival.
The winners, who must live in Hamilton or Burlington and be enrolled in elementary or high school (grades 7 - 13), are selected by Kiwanis adjudicators based on performances throughout the Festival.
The Laurie S. Connon Fund is a component of the Lee Hepner Fund.
